Expats fined OMR 2,000 for illegal tobacco sales

Muscat: A fine of OMR 2,000 has been imposed on expats for selling illegal tobacco in the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali, said Consumer Protection Authority (CPA).

"The Consumer Protection Department in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate in Sur managed to seize quantities of chewing (non-smoked) tobacco in the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali," CPA said in a statement.

During regular field visits to shops and markets, police officers noticed a worker disposing of bags in the trash. Upon inspecting the shop, a bag containing 180 chewing tobacco (non-smoked) was found.

Following the inspection, 96 small bags of 'Afzal' and ten bags of 'Paan' were seized in a nearby store. The seized goods were confiscated in preparation for their destruction, after completing the legal procedures and issuing a seizure report. The expatriate workers confessed the crime charges against them.

An administrative fine of OMR 1,000 was imposed for each violator with a total of OMR 2,000 and all seized quantities of chewing, (non-smoking) tobacco will be destroyed in accordance with the regulations and procedures in force in the CPA.
