Expats fined OMR 3,000 for illegal tobacco sales

Muscat: An administrative fine of OMR 3,000 has been imposed on two expats for selling chewing, non-smoking tobacco in South Al Batinah Governorate, said Consumer Protection Authority (CPA).

According to CPA, the Consumer Protection Department in the Governorate of South Al Batinah in Rustaq, in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police and the Public Prosecution, managed to arrest two expatriate workers selling chewing, non-smoking tobacco, as part of the efforts made by the authority to combat the spread of prohibited substances that have an impact on the health and safety of the individual and society.

During their field visits to shops and markets in the wilayat, the judicial police officers noticed that many consumers of different nationalities frequented some shops, it became clear that they sell chewing, non-smoking tobacco. Permission was taken from the Public Prosecution to inspect their residence in anticipation of storing more tobacco there, and then the shops and the residence was raided in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police.

They seized 66 large Afzal bags, and 164 small Afzal bags, in addition to 17 Naswar bags, and 3 chana bags.  Legal measures were taken against the accused , as OMR 3000 were imposed as an administrative fine on them.
