We Love Oman: Wadi Hibi and Khabourah Castle showcase the varied nature and historic culture

Dotted with historic sights and breath-taking scenery, Al Batinah is considered the green belt of Oman with most of the country’s fresh produce harvested on plantations in the area. Coastal towns are known for their fisheries and endless sandy beaches. Sohar, Oman’s capital city in ancient times, is located in this region and rumoured to be the hometown of the legendary Sindbad the Sailor. Today, the city is one of the largest in the Sultanate, housing one of the region’s largest ports and many of the country’s main industries. While there, do visit both Wadi Hibi and Khabourah Castle, places that perfectly capture the varied nature and historic culture of the Sultanate of Oman.

“Wadi Hibi is located about 80 km from Sohar and meanders between rugged mountains and date palms. Its main attractions are the fort, which has two large courtyards, as well as its many natural water pools,” according to the Ministry of Tourism. Wadi Hibi is known for its freshwaters which flows throughout the year. One can also see many mud houses here.

“Facing the sea, Al Khabourah Castle is located 2 km north east from Al Khabourah roundabout. Visitors can explore the former living and storage quarters left and right of the large courtyard, or enjoy the stunning views of the sea and surroundings from the castle walls.” Known for its archaeological landmarks, castles, nature and history, Khabourah has many forts and castles of which Al Khabourah Castle is the most famous one. It is one of the top tourist destinations in the Sultanate and is located little less than 2 kilometres from the main centre of Sohar and close to the Sea of Oman. The castle has a courtyard at the centre and the main entrance is located on the northern side, with two artillery shells beside it.
