Napoli storm into Champions League quarter-finals

NAPLES: Hosts Napoli stormed into the quarter-finals of the Champions League as they recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the second leg tie of the round of 16 clash on Wednesday night.

Victor Osimhen was the hero of Napoli's victory with a brace while Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty to make it 3-0 for the Italian league leaders to advance on a 5-0 aggregate.

Luciano Spalletti's Napoli already were two goals up from the first leg, and on Wednesday, Osimhen, the Nigeria striker's thumping header in first-half stoppage time, dispelled any lingering nerves at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Osimhen doubled the Italians' lead on the night with a close-range finish from Giovanni di Lorenzo's cross eight minutes after the break and, then Zielinski was brought down in the box for a spot kick to be awarded.

Napoli hold a commanding 18-point lead at the top of Serie A, and head into the last eight with a real chance to compete for top prize in European football.

They are the third Italian club in the quarter-finals this time, joining Inter Milan and AC Milan.

The build-up to match had been overshadowed as Eintracht Frankfurt fans clashed with police after arriving in Naples despite being banned from attending the second leg of the last-16 tie.

The draw of the Champions League quarter-finals will be held on Friday following the conclusion of the round of 16 on Wednesday.

The eight teams in the last eight are Real Madrid, Napoli, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Benfica, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Inter Milan.
