Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has welcomed the start of the process of unloading oil from the floating tanker Safir off the Yemen coast.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “The Sultanate of Oman welcomes the start of the process of unloading oil from the floating tanker Safir anchored off the coast of Yemen, in order to avoid an environmental catastrophe on the coasts and territorial waters of Yemen and the Red Sea.”

The Sultanate praised the efforts of the United Nations (UN) and the cooperation of Yemeni parties and the international community in transporting more than one million barrels of oil to a new tanker called "Yemen".

Production, unloading and maintenance operations on the Safir board were suspended in 2015 due to the outbreak of the war, as a result of which the structural integrity of the Safir tanker deteriorated significantly. There are assessments that the tanker is beyond repair, and is at risk for an event of leakage or explosion.
