MUSCAT: In one of the rare cases, six people, including one policeman were killed and 28 others were injured when the attackers opened fire at a mosque in Wadi Kabir in Muscat on Monday night.
Oman News Agency said that three attackers were also killed in the incident.
The Pakistan Embassy in Oman said that four of its nationals were killed in the mosque attack.
The dead have been identified as Ghulam Abbas, Hasan Abbas, Sayyed Qaisar Abbas and Sulaiman Nawaz, according to the Pakistan Embassy in Oman.
In a statement, Oman News Agency said, “The Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the military and security services announced the conclusion of procedures for addressing the shooting incident that occurred on Monday, in the Wadi Al Kabir area of Muscat Governorate.”
The incident resulted in the death of six people, the martyrdom of a police officer, and the killing of the three perpetrators, in addition to injury to 28 people of different nationalities.
Among the injured were four individuals, including policemen and Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority’s personnel, who were performing their national duty. The injured have been transferred to health institutions for treatment.
Investigations into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing,” the ONA said.
ROP offers condolences and sympathies to the families of the deceased, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
ROP also extends appreciation for the national efforts and cooperation of citizens and residents, which resulted in containing the situation.
ROP stresses the need to get information from official channels and to ignore non-reliable sources.
The US embassy in Muscat issued a security alert following the shooting and cancelled all visa appointments on Tuesday. “US citizens should remain vigilant, monitor local news and heed directions of local authorities,” the embassy wrote on their Twitter account.
