Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology has conducted a pilot project paving roads with rubber-modified asphalt in the Wilayat of Bidiyah, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. This innovative asphalt is known for its enhanced flexibility, resistance to cracking, wear, and thermal effects, contributing to a longer road lifespan. It also offers the added benefits of recycling used tires and reducing environmental pollution.
Abdulaziz bin Fahd Al Nasiri, Director of the Roads Department in the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, explained that this new experiment utilises rubber-modified asphalt incorporating rubber polymer SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene), glass fibers, and nanomaterials. The ministry's objective is to prolong road life and decrease the need for frequent, costly maintenance.
This initiative also contributes to environmental sustainability by utilising plastic waste and tire rubber. This helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions, improves shock absorption, lessens noise pollution, and enhances the road's ability to withstand heavy loads and traffic. These rubber-modified roads represent a significant advancement in modern road construction.
