Oman participates in UN Foreign Experts Meeting on Geographical Names in New York

New York— The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority, is participating in the 2025 session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), held at the UN headquarters in New York, USA.

The current session emphasized the significance of geographical names as cultural heritage and identity markers, alongside standardizing their spelling nationally and internationally. Discussions also covered methods of collecting geographical names, the role of relevant authorities in preserving and unifying them, and the impact of modern technology and artificial intelligence in managing geographical naming systems.

Oman presented its national report on achievements and activities in geographical naming from 2023 to 2025, along with a working paper and visual presentation on the role of the Unified Arab System in the transliteration of geographical names from Arabic to Latin. On the sidelines of the session, Oman also participated in the side meeting of the Arab Division of the UNGEGN.
