Final phase of marine mammal survey project begins in Musandam

Khasab: The Environment Authority has commenced the final phase of its marine mammal species survey project in Musandam Governorate, which will continue until 31 October. This effort is part of the Authority’s ongoing work to conduct environmental surveys and monitoring within the boundaries of the National Nature Park in Musandam.

The survey aims to establish a scientific database that contributes to enhancing marine environmental conservation and management efforts, identifying the types of marine mammals, their distribution areas, and their seasonal presence in the governorate. It will also help create a precise scientific map of marine biodiversity in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Authority pointed out that the results of surveys conducted during 2023, 2024, and the first phase of 2025 recorded five species of marine mammals. These included four species of dolphins: the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin, the spinner dolphin, the common long-beaked dolphin with yellow spots, and the bottlenose dolphin, in addition to one species of whale, which is Bryde’s whale.
