Oman set to host GCC Youth and Women’s Golf Championships

MUSCAT : The Sultanate of Oman, through the Oman Golf Association (OGA), is set to host the prestigious GCC Youth and Women's Golf Championships at Ghala Golf Club from 21–24 December.

The event will feature Under-13 Boys, Under-16 Boys, Under-16 Girls, and Women's categories, bringing together top young and emerging golfers from across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Faiz Mohammed Riaz, OGA Vice- Chairman, described the championships as a key milestone in Oman’s golf journey.

“These age categories and the ladies' division form the foundation for building future achievements and shaping champions who can compete at regional and international levels,” he said.

He added that hosting the championships strengthens Oman's presence on the Gulf golf map.

“Strong competition with GCC national teams is the fastest path for developing our players, enhancing their technical and mental abilities, and preparing them for greater challenges ahead,” said Faiz.

Oman U13 boys' team will be spearheaded by defending individual champion Yusuf Al Rumhi and Taimur Al Busaidi along with Ibrahim Mohammed Riaz. Yusuf and Taimur had last year also won the team title for Oman and strengthening the squad is promising Ibrahim.

The U16 boys' squad will comprise Mohammed Al Junaidy and Mohib Al Kathiri while the U16 girls' team will comprise Miraeri Sampat, Yasmin Al Kathiri, Heba Said Al Nabhani. The women's squad will include Wafa Al Hadhrami and Umaima Ali Al Hajri.

Faiz praised the backing of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, along with government entities and private partners.

“Collaboration with our institutional partners is fundamental to the success of major championships and the overall growth of the sport,” he said.

All the six GCC countries will participate with teams in each category, ensuring strong competition and high technical standards.

“The championship provides an ideal platform to identify emerging talents and integrate them into long-term development pathways,” Faiz added.

The OGA has implemented long-term plans to expand the junior player base, increase international exposure, and strengthen national teams.

Both boys' and girls' squads have undergone intensive training at Ghala Golf Club under qualified coaches to ensure readiness.

Faiz emphasized the association's focus on promoting golf among girls and supporting women's participation.

“Through schools, community initiatives, dedicated tournaments, and training programmes, we aim to give equal opportunities for young women and girls to represent Oman,” he said.

Golf is also seen as a key driver for sports tourism and economic growth. “The development of golf aligns with Oman Vision 2040, enhancing quality of life, professionalizing sports, and showcasing Oman as a global destination,” added the senior OGA official.

Ghala Golf Club, Oman's oldest golf course established in 1971, has evolved from a sand course into a modern 18-hole grass course with state-of-the-art training facilities.

“We have worked to provide an ideal organizational environment that reflects the scale and importance of the event, showcasing Omani sport at its best,” Faiz said.

Looking ahead, the OGA top functionary confirmed Oman's ambitions extend beyond the Gulf. “Talent is available, infrastructure is in place, and support continues to grow. The next phase will focus on hosting major Asian and international championships and strengthening our national teams. Investing in young talent is the key to a bright future for Omani golf.”
