MUSCAT: Oman underlined their consistency in the ongoing 2026 Men's Asian Games Hockey Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday as they sealed their sixth successive qualification for the Asiad, scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya in Japan.
Oman hockey team displayed a commanding statement of intent, securing their third consecutive win in the group phase of the ongoing qualifiers with a 2-1 victory over Hong Kong on Monday.
Displaying composure, discipline and attacking sharpness, Oman edged past Hong Kong in a fiercely contested encounter to maintain a flawless record and march into the semi-finals with maximum points.
The result not only confirmed their passage to the continental showpiece but also reinforced their credentials as serious title contenders in the qualifiers.
With three wins on the trot, Oman have nine points and one game remaining against Kazakhstan on Tuesday remaining to conclude their Group A engagements.
With a better goal difference over second-placed Indonesia, Oman are already assured of a top place in the group and will meet Uzbekistan in the semi-finals on April 9. Indonesia will take on Sri Lanka in the other semi-final.
The ‘Hockey Reds’ began their campaign with a 4-1 win over Indonesia before overcoming Thailand 2-1 in the next match. Against Hong Kong, Osama Ramadan’s standout display earned him the Player of the Match award—the third successive time an Omani player has claimed the honour in the competition—highlighting the team’s collective excellence.
Oman, defending champions of the 2022 Asian Games Qualifiers, are now within touching distance of retaining the crown. Having lifted the previous edition with a convincing 6-2 triumph over Bangladesh, the side has once again peaked at the right moment and will head into the knockout stage brimming with confidence.
Oman’s qualification for the 20th Asian Games to be held in Nagoya, Japan, from September 18 to October 3, will give them yet another opportunity to compete against the continent’s elite. Oman will be joined by fellow qualifiers Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Uzbekistan, along with two more teams from the ongoing event.
At Nagoya, the six qualifying teams will face formidable opposition in traditional powerhouses India, Pakistan, South Korea, China, Japan and Malaysia, setting the stage for a high-intensity tournament.
Steady rise
Oman hockey team’s consistent presence at the Asian Games reflects a steady rise over decades. Since making their debut in 1982 in New Delhi, Oman have gradually built a competitive programme.
After intermittent appearances in the early years (Seoul 1986 and Hiroshima 1994), they returned strongly in Doha 2006 and have since qualified regularly – Guangzou 2010, Incheon 2014, Jakarta 2018, Hangzhou 2022 – and now Nagoya 2026.
Despite the progress, Oman are still chasing a breakthrough performance at the Games, with their best-ever finish being seventh place — achieved on five occasions, including the most recent edition in Hangzhou 2022.
Now, with momentum on their side and a squad firing in unison, Oman will look to carry their Bangkok form into Nagoya and aim for a historic leap beyond their long-standing benchmark.
For now, however, the immediate focus remains on the semi-finals — and potentially another title — as Oman continue their impressive march through the qualifiers.
