Muscat: The Environment Authority carried out a field reconnaissance tour along the beaches of Masirah Island to evaluate proposed fishermen landing sites and identify key environmental threats—particularly in sea turtle nesting areas. The initiative aims to support the regulation of coastal activities based on sustainable environmental principles.
The visit was conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Environment Society of Oman, and Bihar Al Mustaqbal.
The tour included discussions on environmental challenges such as waste from fishing nets and discarded ice bags, as well as the impact of vehicle movement on beaches. Participants also reviewed the environmental importance of Masirah Island and its unique biodiversity.
Specialists emphasised the importance of developing practical solutions that enhance the balance between environmental protection and the sustainability of the fisheries sector, in cooperation with relevant stakeholders.
