'Academia, industry need to work hand-in-hand in Oman'

Muscat: A collaboration between academic institutions and the industrial sector is very essential for both to become successful, said the acting Dean of the Caledonian College of Engineering.
“We are preparing engineers for the future of these industries so the partnership between academic institutions and the industrial sector is vital,” said Dr Ahmed Al Hassan Balushi, acting dean of the Caledonian College of Engineering (CCE) on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gulf Muscat United LLC.
According to CCE officials, Gulf Muscat United LLC (GMU) is a leading company in the Sultanate of Oman.
“We really appreciate your collaboration and the willingness to partner with us to ensure a practical exposure, which is necessary for the academic curriculum,” Balushi said.
With a rich business background in many countries in the region, GMU has a portfolio of diversified global business activity, including agricultural commodities products, cement and building materials, construction, ICT and telecom, oil and gas, and properties development and investment.
“Your alliance is a golden opportunity for us, as well as the students; this will give exposure to the students, not only in the local Omani Market, but also in the overseas market,” the acting Dean noted.
Agreement signed
The MoU signed between CCE and GMU covers recruitment and student internships and explore straining, research and development opportunities in the fields of engineering and allied fields.
“This MoU will go a long way in our efforts to attract young and talented Omani engineers to build a sustainable future for our operations in Oman,” Mehdi Shekofteh Borhani, chairman of the GMU said.
According to the spokesperson of Caledonian college, a provision for CCE graduate students to pursue student placement opportunities at GMU has also been created.
“This MoU will explore training programmes for GMU, including custom-made short courses; other activities serving the engineering sector in the region are included, as well as cooperation in organising seminars and conferences,” he added.
