Muscat: A large number of Indian students have signed up for an Oman scholarship, officials have revealed.
The Ministry of Higher Education had announced six scholarships for Indian students under a new scholarship programme in Oman. Indian students below 25 years of age are eligible for scholarships under the Omani Programme for Cultural and Scientific Cooperation for the academic year 2017.
The scheme is for higher studies and covers engineering, administrative, IT language and art specialisation and is open for Indian expatriates living in Oman, as well as India, to study in Oman for a period of five years.
The last date of receiving applications at the Indian Embassy of India, Muscat was on August 28, 2017. “We got around 70 applications from Oman and another 20 applications from India. Besides that, the Omani Embassy in India received some applications,” an Indian Embassy official, said.
He added that the six candidates selected will be notified within a couple of month’s time. “A committee will go through the application process and will notify them,” the official said.
The duration of study will be five years and the students will not be permitted to change the education institute or programme for which they have been accepted, according to a notice issued by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education, Government of India.
Students selected for the scholarship will be given OMR200 as pocket money, and will be provided accommodation and transportation. They will also get free treatment at government hospitals, except for dental and for treatment charges related to road accidents involving those, who are having uninsured vehicles or driving without driving licence.
Students will also be given two-way air tickets once a year.
“However, students residing in Oman, and having obtained the scholarship under the Omani Programme for Cultural and Scientific Cooperation will enjoy all the benefits, except for the monthly allowance and air ticket,” the Embassy said.
The candidate should be below the age of 25 years as of October 1, 2017 and must hold a general secondary certificate or Higher Education Diploma or should have completed Grade plus 2.
