Muscat: Females are better in physics than males, according to recent research.
The study, conducted by Nasser Sulaiyam Al Mazidi, a researcher who works as a physics supervisor at the Ministry of Education, found that females do better than males in science subjects, such as physics.
“The study was aimed at revealing the effect of teaching physics using scientific experiments and explorations in acquiring physical concepts and developing the skills of laboratory work and the direction towards physics,” said Al Mazidi.
The study found that there were statistically significant differences between the achievement of males and females in general, and in favour of females in acquiring physical concepts.
It showed that students showed high skills in the laboratory work, and that males preferred to carry out experiments in the traditional laboratory, while females preferred to experiment using computerised experiments.
Al Mazidi said, “I chose this study because of the nature of my job as a physics supervisor and a teacher before that, and during that I’ve noticed that students in the laboratory classes don’t get involved enough in the experiments, because of the time shortage and the lack of equipment available, and I want to find new ways to involve them more in the learning process, and that’s when I suggested using the computerised scientific experiment method as a solution.”
He added that the sample consisted of 117 students, males and females in Grade 11 studying physics at two schools in Al Rustaq and who were divided into two experimental and control groups.
