11,000 jobs for Omanis coming in sales sector, Shura hears

Muscat: The sales and distribution sector will provide 11,000 jobs for Omanis over the next three years, officials said during a meeting with the Shura Council on Tuesday.
Members of the Youth and Human Resources Committee at the Shura Council met with the representative of the Omanisation Committees in the sales and distribution sector, in addition to companies that work in the sector.
“It is hoped that the sector will provide more than 11,000 jobs for citizens over the next three years,” officials said.
The meeting was held as part of the council’s follow-up to the issue of the employment of the national workforce.
Committee members discussed the contribution of the sales and distribution sector to the total number of employees working in the private sector. In 2016 there were 201,588 Omanis working in sales and distribution.
The sector is the second largest employer of the nation’s workforce, after the construction sector, employing 14 per cent of the total workforce in the Sultanate.
Representatives of the sector also discussed the percentage of Omanisation it has reached, compared to the percentage sought by the government.
Further, Shura members called for the coming together of factories and warehouses to support Omanis working in the sector, to ensure their continued employment and success, and to achieve social and economic stability.
