Muscat: The ancient city of Qalhat near Sur was afforded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO a few days ago, at the 42nd Session of the World Heritage Committee being held in Manama, Bahrain.
Qalhat was developed as a major port on the east coast of Arabia between the 11th and 15th centuries CE, during the reign of the Hormuz princes. This video captures the reaction of the Omani delegation — and the rest of the crowd— the moment that it was announced that Qalhat had been awarded its Heritage status.
