Muscat: Waste generated during this year’s Edit Al Fitr celebrations increased by more than 36 per cent compared to regular days, according to the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah).
Eid Al Fitr is celebrated at the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan. During the three-day celebration, many families gather and feast, which leads to a spike in waste during the short period.
Fatma Al Mujainia, Deputy Strategic Manager for Municipal Solid Waste at be’ah, spoke to Times of Oman about the increase in waste during Eid. “The amount of waste recorded during Eid Al Fitr has increased by 36 per cent compared to the amount of waste on normal days,” she said.
During Eid many families slaughter animals, thus according to Al Mujainia this is one of the causes of the rise in waste, “This increase could be because the waste that comes from slaughtered animals increased the amount of waste moved to engineered landfills.”
be’ah issued a statement regarding the waste recorded during the holidays, saying: “The engineered landfills in the Sultanate have seen large amounts of Municipal Solid Waste and slaughter waste during the Eid Al Fitr Holidays. The amount of waste has been estimated at over 20,000 tonnes,” be’ah said.
A spokesman for be’ah told Times of Oman that the company works to prepare its services during festive periods as per the need of the area “These services are constantly improving. At the same time, preparing the containers and services for Eid Al Fitr waste can take time and research in order to balance costs.”
be’ah has urged the public to beware of the waste they produce during their celebrations.
Eng. Muhannad Al Jumaa, Director of the be’ah Academy, said: “The company faces challenges during the festive seasons because of the harmful behaviour of some people while getting rid of Municipal Solid Waste and slaughter waste, which cause many harmful effects on public health and the cleanness of the environment around them.”
