Originally built by Sultan bin Ahmed the 7th, the grandfather of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said, it was rebuilt in 1972 as a royal residence.

Al Alam means ‘the flag’ in Arabic. The palace was built over the site of the former British Embassy where a stump of a flagpole was.

Since it is closed to the public, visitors flock to the palace gates daily and marvel at the blue and gold mushroom pillars of the main facade.

The palace is elegantly designed and features highly polished marble surfaces.

It is mainly used now for ceremonial purposes.
