Oman National Day: A celebration of peace, prosperity and unity

Muscat: As Oman celebrates its 54th National Day, the Sultanate stands as a shining example of peace and progress in the Middle East.

The celebrations honour the legacy of late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour, the visionary leader who laid the foundations for Oman’s modern renaissance, as well as the continued efforts of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, who has guided the country through a period of stability and growth.

Since late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour first took the throne in 1970, Oman has undergone remarkable transformation — from an impoverished nation with limited infrastructure and diplomatic ties to a peaceful, prosperous country admired worldwide for its neutrality, progressive policies, and commitment to sustainable development.

Under His Majesty the Sultan’s leadership, Oman has remained steadfast in its dedication to both domestic well-being and international peacebuilding. This year’s National Day celebrations also reflect the resilience of the Omani people.

Despite the global challenges of the past few years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, economic fluctuations, and regional tensions, Oman has navigated these issues with diplomacy, unity, and careful planning. The country’s unwavering commitment to progress continues to inspire citizens and expatriates alike.

Sayyida Zawan Al Said expressed her admiration for the country’s extraordinary transformation. “Everyone has witnessed Oman’s unprecedented progress on the global stage,” she said.

“This leap is absolutely remarkable. We’ve gone from a country that, in many ways, was stuck in the medieval ages to one that is now recognised as a developing nation.

“I don’t know of any other country that has made such an incredible leap from medievalism to modernity. It’s a huge achievement.” She added, “Oman was once unknown to the world, but through its development, it has proudly secured its place on the global map.”

The country’s achievements are echoed in the words of Saada Al Ismaili, an Omani citizen from Muscat, who also expressed pride in Oman’s journey. She said: “The 54th National Day is a time to reflect on the achievements of our nation and the wise leadership of both late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour and His Majesty the Sultan. Under His Majesty’s guidance, we have built a country that offers stability, opportunity, and peace - something we treasure deeply.”

Nasser Al Balushi, a resident of Suwaiq, expressed his pride in Oman’s journey. He said: “Looking back to when late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said bin Taimour ascended to the throne, we were a country struggling with basic infrastructure and economic challenges. Today, we stand as a symbol of progress, competing with the world’s most developed nations in terms of quality of life and stability. This is all thanks to the vision of our leaders.”

Oman’s economy has also undergone a significant transformation over the past five decades. Vision 2040, the country’s strategic development plan, is positioning Oman as a key player in the region, with an emphasis on diversification, sustainability, and innovation. Major infrastructure projects, including the expansion of ports, roads, and renewable energy initiatives, are contributing to the country’s future growth, creating opportunities for both Omanis and expatriates.

For expatriates living in Oman, the high standard of living is one of the most compelling reasons to stay.

Manoj Didwania, an entrepreneur from India who has been living in Muscat for the past 35 years, said, “Oman’s affordability, combined with the high standard of living, makes it a perfect place for those looking to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. This is why many of us have chosen to make Oman our home.”

Abhishek Kalla, another expat and a lawyer by profession, from India, agreed: “The welcoming nature of Oman, coupled with its affordable living and safety, makes it one of the best places in the region for expatriates. This country truly feels like home.”

The spirit of unity, peace, and progress that defines Oman is evident not just in its leadership but in the country’s citizens as well.

From the mountains of Dhofar to the coast of Muscat, Omanis are proud of their country’s journey and hopeful for the future. The celebration of the 54th National Day serves as a testament to the ongoing growth of O man - a nation committed to a prosperous future for all. As Oman continues to evolve under the guidance of His Majesty the Sultan, it remains a beacon of peace, prosperity, and opportunity in the region, where both citizens and expatriates can thrive together.
