Latest on traffic law: Jail sentence planned for ‘driving and phoning’ in Oman
Muscat: Majlis Al Shura approved the report of the Joint Committee with State Council on the remarks about the draft amendments to the Traffic Law, which was approved by Shura as His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said had requested to reconsider such amendments.
It held a general discussion on the economic and financial conditions of the state in light of the decline in oil prices in world markets and the effect of the same on the state budget, as well as the precautionary measures to be taken by the government to address this situation.
The members exchanged views and proposals on how to boost the Omani economy. After the general discussion, Majlis Al Shura decided to form an ad-hoc committee for studying the economic challenges facing the Sultanate and propose the alternatives to alleviate the effect of the oil price slump on the Omani economy.
The Majlis Al Shura also approved the financial declaration by the members in response to the proposal of Shura office, which is in line with the Protection of Public Funds and Avoidance of Conflict of Interests Law issued by the Royal Decree No. 112/2011.
After detailed discussions, Shura also approved the vision of the Economic and Financial Committee on the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income between the Sultanate and Estonia. It also approved the draft amendments to the Trade Facilitation Convention, Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights and the International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System.
At the beginning of the session, Shura approved the request of Nasser bin Rashid Al Abri on the regulations for the general education diploma, which were issued by the Minister of Education recently. He requested to cancel this decision and cited the reasons, rational and negative effects of this decision.
Majlis Al Shura held its 7th regular session of the first annual sitting (2015-2016) of the 8th term (2015-2019) under the Chairman Khalid bin Hilal Al Ma’awali on Monday.
It was also briefed on the draft final documents for the International Post Union Conference for 2012, which were referred by the Council of Ministers. The documents were returned to the Services and Social Development Committee for study. Majlis was also briefed on the draft Oman Penal Code, which was referred by the Council of Ministers and decided to refer it to the Legislative and Legal Committee for study. -ONA
