Green building certification up 10% amid sustainability push

MUSCAT: The demand for green building certifications in Oman has surged by 10%, reflecting a growing commitment to sustainable construction, energy efficiency, and environmental protection.

“Green buildings play a vital role in reducing environmental impacts, improving energy and water efficiency, and providing healthier, more sustainable environments for our communities,” said Fatin bint Kamil Al Shalwani, Architectural Engineer at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning.

Fatin Al Shalwani said that “green buildings integrate a range of eco-friendly practices, including enhanced thermal insulation, rationalised water use, renewable energy resources, and high-efficiency lighting and air conditioning systems.”

“The Sultanate is establishing sustainability and energy-efficiency standards to guide the market and ensure planning aligns with international benchmarks for smart, sustainable cities,” she added.

“These initiatives support the country’s transition to a green economy under Oman Vision 2040.”

Dr. Rabie bin Mohammed Al Rahbi, Director of the Environmental Standards Centre at the Environment Authority, emphasised the significance of the 10% increase in the demand for certification of environment-friendly buildings.

“Green buildings provide a competitive edge to developers by offering quality environmental certification,” he said. “This certification helps attract green finance while minimising environmental risks.”

Green buildings optimise energy use through effective insulation and clean energy for heating and cooling, while rationalising water use via efficient pumping and recycling systems. “These practices not only reduce harmful impacts on the environment but also generate key economic benefits,” Al Rahbi added.

The environmental advantages are clear: reduced greenhouse gas emissions, minimised construction and operational waste, and the promotion of urban biodiversity through green spaces.

Numerous projects in Oman’s construction, tourism, and hospitality sectors have already achieved various levels of international green building certification.

The Environment Authority is also upgrading Oman’s Environmental Performance Index to contribute to the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan endorsed by the UN and to advance the strategic goals of Oman Vision 2040, including significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and the promotion of sustainable urban development.
