Explosion hits police station in India-administered Kashmir

A police station in Srinagar in India-administered Kashmir has been hit by an explosion, police said Friday.

At least nine people have died in the "accidental" explosion, according to reports by Indian media.

National newspaper The Indian Express reported nine people were killed and 29 injured in the blast that was heard as far as 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) away. Another national newspaper Hindustan Times also reported that nine people had died and several others were injured, without specifying a source.

What do we know about the incident?

The blast reportedly happened while officials were handling explosives that had been seized during a police operation into a terror cell, according to Indian news agency PTI.

The Nowgam police station was engulfed in fire as a result of the explosion and several vehicles nearby were damaged.

Most of those dead or injured are members of the police force or the forensic team which was inspecting the explosives, reports said.

Several small explosions followed the initial blast, which briefly delayed rescue and firefighting efforts.

Why are tensions high in India?

While the explosion appears to have been an accident, it comes amid heightened tensions in India.

On Monday, a car exploded in the capital, New Delhi, killing at least eight people in what the Indian government has called a terror attack.

Indian security agencies detained several suspects in Kashmir as part of their investigations into the car explosion.
