Muscat: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has achieved a qualitative research milestone in 2025, as the number of its scientific papers indexed in the Scopus database exceeded 2,100 research outputs. This figure serves as an indicator of the university's escalating scientific productivity and its enhanced international academic presence.
This accomplishment crowns a sustained upward trajectory in research outputs in recent years. The university's research production has achieved a cumulative growth estimated at 35 percent during the period from 2023 to 2025. This reflects a gradual and balanced development based on the accumulation of institutional efforts, the systematic expansion of the research ecosystem, and the reinforcement of the research and innovation environment, moving beyond temporary spikes.
The published research encompassed multiple scientific fields, including medical sciences, social sciences and humanities, engineering, as well as agricultural and environmental sciences, and interdisciplinary research. This enhances the diversity of the university's research activity and its relevance to developmental and societal issues.
This notable progress is attributed to the development of the research environment at the university. This has been achieved through strengthening support for researchers and empowering them to direct their research towards serving national priorities, alongside organizing mechanisms to support scientific publishing and expanding the involvement of university students in research studies that effectively contribute to addressing societal issues.
Dr. Ghazi Ali Al Rowas, Dean of Research at Sultan Qaboos University, stated that this achievement reflects the integration of efforts between colleges, research centers, and academic and administrative personnel in entrenching a culture of scientific research. It contributes to enhancing Sultan Qaboos University's ranking and academic reputation, supports the expansion of research partnership opportunities and international funding, and improves its presence in global indicators and evaluations.
He added that the university is keen on entrenching research as a fundamental pillar within its academic system through its close connection to teaching, graduate programs, and community service, as well as its focus on solving challenges facing the public and private sectors. This, he added, confirms the university's ability to continue developing its research ecosystem and enhancing its role as a leading academic and research institution at the regional and international levels.
