Hotter summer ahead as Oman faces months of above-average heat

MUSCAT: Oman is likely to experience above-average temperatures throughout the summer months of June, July and August 2026, according to the latest seasonal climate bulletin issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The outlook, released by the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre, indicates that temperatures across the Sultanate are expected to remain higher than the climatological average during all three months.

For June 2026, the forecast shows a high probability of temperatures exceeding normal levels across Oman. Similar conditions are expected in July, with above-average temperatures forecast to prevail over most parts of the country.

The trend is projected to continue into August, when temperatures are also expected to remain above the long-term average, suggesting a prolonged period of hotter-than-usual weather across the Sultanate.

In addition to the heat outlook, the CAA said rainfall during June is expected to remain below average in several parts of the country. The forecast predicts reduced rainfall activity, particularly in eastern and southeastern regions of Oman, while the rest of the Sultanate is likely to receive near-average to slightly below-average precipitation.

The authority noted that the monthly seasonal bulletin is designed to provide an early indication of weather trends over longer periods, helping authorities, businesses and the public prepare for expected climatic conditions.

However, the CAA stressed that seasonal forecasts are broad outlooks and should not replace regular monitoring of short- and medium-term weather updates, which provide more accurate information on developing weather systems and local conditions.

The authority urged the public and relevant sectors to continue following official weather bulletins, particularly during the peak summer season when extreme heat can affect public health, outdoor activities and infrastructure.

The forecast comes as Oman and much of the Arabian Peninsula continue to experience increasingly warm summers, with temperatures in some areas already approaching the 50°C mark in recent weeks.

Temperatures continued to climb across Oman on Monday, with the highest reading of 46.6°C recorded in As Sunainah, according to CAA.

The latest weather observations, covering the previous 24 hours ending on June 8, showed several locations across the Sultanate experiencing intense heat as summer conditions strengthened.

Hamra Al Droua registered the second-highest temperature at 46.5°C, followed by Al Buraimi, Dima Wat Tayeen, and Samail, each recording 46.4°C.

Other areas among the hottest locations included Al Kamil Wal Wafi at 46.1°C, Fahud at 45.4°C, Al Qabil at 45.3°C, Muqshin and Bidiyah at 45.1°C, and Ibra at 45.0°C.

Authorities have advised residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses by staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and following official weather updates.
