Latest: Cyclone Kyarr downgraded to storm

Muscat: Tropical Cyclone Kyarr has been downgraded to Category one, according to Oman's Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA).

Kyarr, which started off as a Category 4 cyclone has been gradually declining with a current surface wind speed of around 64 to 82 knots. In a statement online, PACA said: “The National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre (NMHEWC) analysis indicates that the tropical cyclone “KYARR” CAT 1 centred over west central of Arabian Sea 30th Octover 2019 is located at longitude 62.2 degree East and 19.6 degree North.

The tropical cyclone is about 440 km away from the closest points along Oman’s coasts (Ras Madrakah).

“Latest NMHEWC weather analysis outputs indicate continuous movement of the KYARR to the direction of westerly/southwesterly parallel to the governorates of south Al Sharqiya and Al Wusta within coming 48 hours with gradual degraded intensification, the distance of its centre to Ras Madrakah between is expected to be (150-250) km as the nearest point with no possibility of crossing Sultanate coasts.”

Officials added that the sea condition will be rough along the coasts of Governorate’s of south Al Sharqiya, Al Wusta and Dhofar with maximum height ranges between 6 to 8 metres.

“[It] will be moderate to rough over rest of Oman’s coasts with maximum wave height of (3 metres) with chances of sea water inundation over low level coastal areas coinciding with timing of high sea tides,” PACA said in a statement online.

The NMHEWC is still closely monitoring and analysing all updates regarding Kyarr. The public are advised to follow PACA’s latest weather bulletins and avoid going out to sea.
